The short answer
Duo is free for a business account with exactly one user, provided you hold an Amazon Prime membership on a personal account and link it — or use the same email address for both. It carries the full Prime Business shipping benefit set. It does not include Spend Visibility or Guided Buying, and adding a second user ends it at renewal.
Duo is genuinely good value for a one-person business, which is why it gets recommended constantly. What almost nobody does is read the help page it comes from, which runs to a plan table, a linking mechanism, a 90-day cooldown and an FAQ about override behavior. If you are going to build your buying around a free tier, you should know what can switch it off.
The eight published rules
Every one of these is Amazon's own statement, not our inference:
- Only business accounts with one user can enroll.
- You must hold an Amazon Prime membership on a personal account and link it to the business account.
- Adding more users makes the business account ineligible for Duo at the time of renewal.
- Canceling the personal Amazon Prime membership cancels Duo after 30 days.
- A personal Prime membership can power only one Duo subscription at a time.
- Overriding an existing link cancels Duo on the other business account within 30 days.
- Duo links can only be changed between business accounts once every 90 days.
- Duo does not include the Spend Visibility or Guided Buying benefits.
Rules three and four are the ones that bite in practice. Hiring your first employee and adding them to the account does not cost you Duo immediately — it costs you Duo at the time of renewal, which means the change can arrive months after the decision that caused it, long after anyone remembers making it.
What "free" actually means here
Amazon's plan table lists Duo's annual fee as: free with a business account using the same email address as your personal account, or with an Amazon Prime membership on a linked personal account.
So the honest accounting is that Duo has no incremental cost if you already pay for personal Prime for your own household reasons. If you would be buying personal Prime in order to get Duo, you are not getting a free business membership — you are getting a personal Prime membership with a business feature attached, and the arithmetic should be done that way.
That is a meaningful distinction for a sole proprietor deciding between Duo and Essentials at $179/year, because Essentials needs no personal membership at all.
What Duo includes
Amazon lists the following as available on all Prime Business membership plans, Duo included:
- Free Two-Day Shipping
- Free Same-Day/One-Day Shipping
- Discounted Expedited Delivery
- Free Amazon Day Delivery
- Free Consolidated Shipping (3-5 days)
- Free delivery on special items
Plus Prime Day Deals and Prime Early Access on the shopping side, and Prime Business Rewards — Amazon states Duo and Essentials members earn 2% back on eligible purchases from its own brands. The rewards mechanics, including the 12-month expiry, are on Prime Business Rewards.
Duo also carries the partner discounts: Amazon states 50% off CrowdStrike and 70% off the first year of any Gusto HR and payroll plan. Whether those are worth anything depends entirely on whether you were going to buy them — member exclusives priced out.
What Duo does not include
Amazon is explicit: Duo does not include the Spend Visibility or Guided Buying benefits.
For a one-person business this is close to irrelevant. Spend Visibility is a dashboard for analyzing organizational spend across departments; Guided Buying steers employees toward preferred products. Neither concept has content when the organization is you. The free account's Business Analytics reporting — which is available to all Amazon Business customers, paid or not — covers what a sole proprietor actually needs. Duo also does not carry extended payment terms. Amazon's plan-by-plan table lists extended Pay by Invoice terms as N/A for both Duo and Essentials, starting at 45 days on Small.
The linking mechanism, and how it goes wrong
Duo works by tying a personal Prime membership to a business account. Amazon states you link the accounts during Prime Business sign-up, and that by linking you keep all the benefits of your personal account while also accessing Prime Business benefits including Business Analytics, Consolidated Shipping and free business delivery.
Three failure modes are documented:
- Your Prime is already powering another Duo. You can override the existing link during sign-up. The other business account's Duo is canceled within 30 days, and that account gets a notification that its subscription is at risk. To restore it, that account owner must link a different personal Prime membership.
- You want to move the link back. You cannot, not quickly. Changes are limited to once every 90 days.
- Same credentials on both accounts. Amazon states that if you use the same credentials for your personal and business account, you must have Prime on the personal account, and accounts set up that way cannot link a different Prime account.
That last one is a one-way door, and it interacts badly with the privacy issue covered on personal use rules: an account that shares credentials with your personal shopping is an account whose administrator sees your personal order history.
When to leave Duo
Three triggers, in order of how often they occur:
- You add a second user. The account becomes ineligible at renewal, and the natural landing spot is Essentials at $179/year for up to 5 users. Do the move deliberately rather than discovering it on a renewal email.
- You want spend controls. If you have reached the point of wanting purchasing policies and approval routing, note that approval workflows are free on the account — it is Guided Buying specifically that is paid. See Guided Buying and purchasing policies.
- You want to drop personal Prime. Doing so cancels Duo 30 days later, so budget for the switch to a paid tier at the same time.

Who Duo is actually for
A single-operator business — consultant, tradesperson, freelancer, one-person practice — that already pays for personal Prime, buys supplies regularly enough to care about delivery, and has no need for multi-user controls. For that reader Duo is close to a free upgrade and the main thing to protect is the one-user rule.
