Amazon Business Comparisons

Four side-by-side answers to the questions people actually search for in the last few minutes before deciding.

If you only need the summary

  • Business vs personal account — both free; the business one adds pricing, users, approvals, reporting and tax exemption.
  • Account vs Business Prime — the account is free, the membership costs from $179/year and mainly buys shipping and spend controls.
  • Business Prime vs Amazon Prime — different products, different accounts. Duo is the one place they touch.
  • Tier vs tier — headcount decides it; the seat caps are cliffs, not slopes.

Comparison queries are where people are closest to acting, and they are also where this niche is least well served. The pages currently ranking for them tend to be comparing something else entirely by the end — a business bank account, a shipping platform, a listing tool — because the Amazon comparison is a route to a different product.

These four pages compare the things named in their titles and then stop.

Which comparison you actually want

The four get confused with each other constantly, mostly because Amazon's naming is genuinely unhelpful. Here is how to tell which question you are asking.

"I buy on my normal Amazon account and wonder if I should register a business one." That is Amazon Business vs a personal account. Both are free, so it is a question about features and administration, not money.

"I have or want the business account and can't tell what the paid thing adds." That is Amazon Business vs Business Prime. This is the one most guides blur, and blurring it is how people end up paying $179/year for features they already had.

"I already pay for Prime — isn't that the same thing?" That is Business Prime vs Amazon Prime. Short answer: no, but your personal Prime does make the Duo tier free, which is worth knowing before you pay for anything.

"I've decided to buy Business Prime and don't know which tier." That is Business Prime plans compared, where the seat caps do most of the deciding.

One thing to check before any of them

Every comparison here rests on knowing which side of the free/paid line a feature sits on, and this is where stale information does real damage. Amazon raised the seat allowances on the paid tiers to 5, 20 and 200; a large share of the pages ranking for these queries still publish 3, 10 and 100. If you are comparing plans using someone else's table, check its date first — and ours carries one on every page for exactly that reason.

Common questions

What is the difference between Amazon Business and a personal Amazon account?

A business account adds business-only pricing, quantity discounts, multiple users with permissions, approval workflows, purchasing reports and tax-exemption enrollment. A personal account has none of those. Both buy from the same catalog and both are free.

What is the difference between Amazon Business and Business Prime?

Amazon Business is the free account. Business Prime is a paid membership on top of it, adding free business delivery, Spend Visibility, Guided Buying, extended payment terms on higher tiers, and Prime Business Rewards.

Is Business Prime the same as Amazon Prime?

No. Amazon Prime is a personal consumer membership; Business Prime is an organizational membership on a Business account, with its own tiers and seat caps. They meet at one point: the Duo tier is free if you already hold personal Prime.

Which Business Prime plan should I choose?

Headcount decides it more than features. Duo covers a sole proprietor, Essentials up to 5 users, Small up to 20, Medium up to 200 and Enterprise unlimited. Beyond seats, the meaningful jumps are Spend Visibility and Guided Buying at Essentials, 45-day terms at Small, and blocking rather than steering purchases at Enterprise.

Can I have both an Amazon Business account and a personal account?

Yes, and keeping them separate is generally the cleaner arrangement — register the business account with a business email rather than converting the personal account you already use.
