How to Switch an Amazon Business Account Back to Personal

"Change Amazon Business account to personal" is one of those searches where the phrasing hides three quite different jobs. Sorting out which one you are doing takes a minute and saves a great deal of regret, because one of the three is irreversible and deletes records your accountant may want.

1. Switching — you want to shop as yourself right now

Nothing is being changed. You have a business account and a personal account, and you want the consumer storefront for the next ten minutes. Open the account dropdown on desktop, or the menu at the top left on a mobile browser, and select Switch Accounts. Amazon recommends not doing this on shared devices, since everything on the switcher is one click away for the next person at that keyboard.

If the option is not there, Amazon's account switching page states the feature is currently only available to business accounts using free email domains such as Gmail or Yahoo. 2. Unlinking — you want the two accounts to stop being connected

Linking is what makes switching possible. Amazon links the accounts automatically when both use the same email address, and lets you link them manually when they use different ones. If your objection is to the connection rather than to the business account, the answer is usually to move one of them onto its own address — Your Account, then Login & Security, then Email, then Edit.

With one catch that Amazon states plainly: if you signed up for both accounts using the same email address, you must contact Amazon to change the address on either. That is the one route here that is not self-service — contacting Amazon Business customer service covers what they will ask for.

3. Closing — the business account should stop existing

This is what most people mean, and it is the mechanism Amazon actually provides for turning a business account back into a personal one: closure. Amazon states that closing a business account converts it to a personal Amazon account.

What closure costs you

• Order history on shared payment methods is deleted. Not archived. If finance needs those records, export them before you begin — invoices and receipts covers the bulk export routes.
• You can only close an account with 5 or fewer users. Amazon states this as a hard condition, so a real organization has to strip the account down before it can be closed at all.
• Anything set up inside the business account goes with it. Amazon's own caution list is short and worth reading in full:

• Avoid using your business account for non-business purposes such as Amazon Photos, Amazon Music, or running a seller account.
• If the business account ever closes, you lose access to anything set up while signed into it.
• Digital content bought for yourself inside a business account cannot be shared or transferred, and is lost if the account closes.
• Converting a personal account makes your personal information visible to administrators of the business account.

The digital-content point catches people out more than anything else. A Kindle library or an audiobook collection bought while signed into a business account cannot be shared or transferred, and closure takes access with it.

What to export before you close anything

Closure deletes records rather than archiving them, and it does it at the moment you confirm. Everything on this list is trivial to produce beforehand and impossible to produce afterwards.

1. A Business Analytics reconciliation report covering the entire life of the account, not just the current year. This is the only surviving record of orders placed on shared payment methods — spend visibility and reporting covers where to generate it.
2. Invoices and receipts for every open tax year. Bulk export routes are on invoices and receipts.
3. A list of active recurring orders and saved addresses. Subscribe & Save schedules and a shared address book do not migrate; rebuilding them from memory is where the real time goes.
4. Any outstanding Business Credit Account balance, settled. Amazon requires open balances to be resolved before closure, so this one is a blocker rather than a nicety.

The sequence

1. Decide which of the three things you actually want. Switching between two accounts, unlinking a personal account from a business one, or closing the business account entirely. They are not interchangeable and only the third changes what the account is.
2. If you only want to shop personally, switch. Open the account dropdown on desktop, or the top-left menu on a mobile browser, and select Switch Accounts. Both accounts stay exactly as they were.
3. If the business account must go, export your records first. Amazon deletes order history for orders placed with a shared payment method when a business account closes. Download invoices and reports before anything else.
4. Get the account down to five users or fewer. Amazon states you may only close a business account with five or fewer users. Remove members from Business Settings, then Users.
5. Clear balances and cancel any membership. Settle anything owed on a Business Credit Account and cancel or let a Business Prime membership lapse before you attempt closure.
6. Close the business account. Amazon states closing converts the business account to a personal Amazon account. That is the actual mechanism people are searching for when they ask to change a business account back to personal.

The case you should not solve this way

A lot of people arrive here because they converted their personal account into a business account and immediately regretted it, usually after reading that administrators can see their information. Amazon is explicit: converting a personal account makes your personal information visible to administrators in the business account, and that visibility covers what was there before the conversion, not just what comes after.

Closure does end that exposure, but it deletes shared-payment order history on the way out, and it does not un-see anything.
