Business Prime is a paid membership layered on a free Amazon Business account. Amazon publishes five tiers: Duo (free with personal Prime, sole proprietors), Essentials ($179/yr, up to 5 users), Small ($499/yr, up to 20), Medium ($1,299/yr, up to 200) and Enterprise ($10,099/yr, unlimited). Amazon also calls it "Prime Business" — same product.

What the membership adds that the account doesn't have
Five things, and it is worth naming them exactly because the free account is more capable than most write-ups suggest. Business Prime adds free business delivery benefits, Spend Visibility, Guided Buying, extended payment terms (45-day on Small, 60-day on Enterprise, both with a Business Credit Account and subject to approval), and Prime Business Rewards.
Everything else you may associate with "going business" — business-only pricing, quantity discounts, multiple users, approval workflows, purchasing reports, tax-exempt purchasing — is already on the free account. If what you want is on that list, you do not need to be here.
Headcount decides your bill, and it does so in cliffs
This is the part almost nobody publishes, and it is the most decision-relevant arithmetic on the site. The seat caps are not a sliding scale — cross one and the entire next tier applies. So the marginal cost of a single extra user, at exactly the wrong moment, is enormous:
- User number 6 costs $320 a year. Essentials covers 5 users at $179/year. One more forces Small at $499/year.
- User number 21 costs $800 a year. Small covers 20 users at $499/year. One more forces Medium at $1,299/year.
- User number 201 costs $8,800 a year. Medium covers 200 users at $1,299/year. One more forces Enterprise at $10,099/year.
Read that first line again if you run a five-person office. Essentials fits you exactly, with zero headroom — and the day you hire a sixth person your Business Prime bill goes from $179/year to $499/year. The flip side is that the cost per seat improves dramatically as you go up. Essentials is about $35.80 per user per year at full occupancy; Medium is about $6.50. Large organizations get proportionally far more for their money — which is a polite way of saying the pricing is least favorable to exactly the small teams most likely to be reading this.
How to decide, in order
Work through it in this sequence and you will not overbuy:
- Do you already pay for personal Amazon Prime and work alone? Then Duo is free and the decision is over. Take it.
- Is anything you actually want on the free account? Check the free benefit list before paying for a tier. Tax exemption and multi-user access are the two most commonly assumed to be paid, and both are free.
- Price your own shipping. The shipping benefit is the main reason to buy, and its value is entirely specific to your order pattern. If your orders already clear Amazon's free-delivery threshold, you are buying very little.
- Count your seats — then count them again for next year. The cliffs above mean the right question is not "how many buyers do we have" but "how many will we have before this renews".
