How to Cancel Business Prime

A bounty-funded site publishing a cancellation guide looks odd until you notice what it does: it removes the last objection to trying the product. It is much easier to start a free trial when the exit is already known. It is also simply the page a reader in this situation needs, and we would rather be the site that serves that reader than the one that pretends the question does not exist.

What you keep, which is more than most people expect

When the membership ends, the free account remains and so does everything that belongs to it:

• Business-only pricing on millions of products
• Quantity discounts on eligible larger-quantity purchases
• Multi-user accounts with per-user permissions
• Approval workflows and purchasing guardrails
• Purchasing reports and spend analytics
• Amazon Tax Exemption Program (ATEP) enrollment
• Account creation itself — there is no signup fee

Tax-exemption enrollment in particular survives — it is a free-account feature, not a membership one, so canceling Business Prime does not make your organization start paying sales tax again. That single fact settles most people's hesitation about dropping the membership.

What you lose

Five things, and that is the complete list: free business delivery on eligible orders, Spend Visibility, Guided Buying, extended payment terms (45-day on Small and Medium, 60-day on Enterprise), and Prime Business Rewards.

If extended payment terms are in use, treat that one carefully. They run through a Business Credit Account, and canceling drops you back to the standard 30-day terms — so an accounts payable schedule built around 45 or 60 days loses two to four weeks of float on a facility that took an approval to obtain in the first place. The six steps

1. Work out which thing you actually want to cancel. Canceling the Business Prime membership is not the same as closing the Amazon Business account. Dropping the membership keeps the free account and everything on it. Closing the account removes business pricing, multi-user access, approvals, reporting and tax exemption too. Most people want the first.
2. Check the renewal date before anything else. Business Prime bills annually. Find the renewal date so you know whether you are canceling ahead of a charge or after one — it changes what you are asking Amazon for.
3. Consider downgrading rather than canceling. If the tier is wrong rather than the product, moving down a tier keeps the membership benefits at a lower cost. If the membership is wrong entirely, dropping to the free account keeps every free-tier feature.
4. Open Business Prime settings in your Amazon Business account. Membership management lives inside the Amazon Business account rather than in a separate place. Sign in as an account administrator — a standard buyer will not see these settings.
5. Cancel or change the membership. Select the option to cancel or change the Business Prime membership and confirm. Amazon shows the effect on your current billing period at this point; read that screen rather than assuming.
6. Confirm the free account is still intact. After canceling, check that business pricing, your users and any tax-exemption enrollment are still in place. They should be — the free account survives the membership ending.

Downgrade is usually the better move

Before canceling outright, work out which of three things is actually wrong.

The tier is too big. You bought Small for headcount you no longer have. Move down a tier — you keep the benefits at a lower price.

The membership is not earning its fee. Your shipping turned out to be near zero because orders already qualified for free delivery. Drop to the free account; you lose little and save the whole fee. This is the outcome the arithmetic on is Business Prime worth it predicts for a lot of small teams.

Amazon Business as a whole is not for you. Rarer, since the free account costs nothing to keep. But if the account genuinely is not being used, closing it is a separate action from canceling the membership — do the membership first and see whether the free tier is worth keeping before going further.

On refunds

Amazon publishes two paths and one exclusion, and they are more generous than most annual software.

Full refund. Amazon states it will refund the full membership fee only if you made no eligible purchases and took no advantage of Prime Business benefits since your latest membership charge. In practice that is the untouched-renewal case: the fee charged, nobody ordered, you cancel.

Partial refund. Otherwise, Amazon states that if eligible you may receive a partial refund, and that it calculates and displays that figure automatically as you end the membership. You do not have to negotiate it or ask for it — read the number on the confirmation screen before you click through it.

The exclusion. Memberships redeemed through a gift code or promotional code are not refundable at all. If yours arrived through a promotion, there is no partial-refund path and the only question is when to stop the renewal.

The renewal mechanics behind all three — including the mid-term fee increase Amazon reserves the right to apply when your user count crosses a tier — are on renewal and refunds.

If you are canceling a trial

Cancel before the trial window closes. Because Business Prime bills annually, drifting past the deadline means a full-year charge rather than a single month — a materially bigger consequence than with most subscription products. Set a reminder for a few days before the end of the window, not the day of.
