Prime Business Rewards: What 2% and 4% Back Are Actually Worth

Amazon publishes the earn rates, the conversion rate and the expiry window. Put them together and the rewards case for a membership is narrower than the marketing suggests.

The short answer

Amazon states Duo and Essentials members earn 2% back and Small plan members earn a 4% bonus on eligible purchases from its own brands, plus 1% back on eligible orders using Amazon Day delivery. Points convert at 100 points = $1 and expire 12 months after issue.

Every one of those numbers comes from Amazon's own rewards page. The reason this page exists is that they are almost never presented together, and the picture changes once they are — particularly the expiry clause and the "brands by Amazon" qualifier, which between them do most of the work.

The earn rates, by plan

Prime Business Rewards earn rate and rewards-only break-even by plan
PlanAnnual feeBase rateQualifying spend to repay the fee
DuoNo fee2% backNo fee to repay
Essentials$1792% back$8,950 a year
Small$4994% back$12,475 a year

The right-hand column is arithmetic, not an Amazon figure: fee divided by rate. It is the number Amazon does not publish and the one that actually decides whether rewards justify a membership. Two things make it a ceiling rather than a forecast:

  • The headline rates apply to eligible purchases from Amazon's own brands. Your spend on third-party sellers is a large part of most baskets and does not attract the bonus.
  • Points expire after 12 months, so rewards earned and not spent are not banked value.

In practice, if your qualifying spend is anywhere near the break-even figure, the membership is already justified several times over by shipping and controls, and rewards are a rounding error. If your spend is well below it, rewards will not rescue a marginal case. That is why we treat this as a tiebreaker rather than a reason to buy — the same conclusion the full break-even analysis reaches on is Business Prime worth it.

The mechanics Amazon publishes

Conversion and redemption

Points convert at 100 points = $1. Redemption happens at checkout, and Amazon states points can only be redeemed by members on a Prime Business Duo, or paid Essentials or Small plan. You can redeem on most orders except digital items and gift cards.

The gift card exclusion is worth registering, because buying gift cards with points would otherwise be the obvious way to convert an expiring balance into stored value. Amazon has closed that door deliberately.

Expiry

Amazon's wording is direct: points expire 12 months after they are issued, and when redeeming, Amazon will always use the points set to expire soonest. The oldest-first behavior is genuinely customer-friendly and removes the need to manage a balance manually.

What it does not remove is the underlying dynamic: a business that earns steadily and redeems rarely will lose points every month once the first year has rolled over. Set a recurring reminder to spend the balance, or accept that the effective rate is lower than 2%.

Cancellation

Amazon states that if you cancel your membership you stop earning and your unexpired points become unavailable — and that if you rejoin Prime Business, your unexpired points become available again. Points are frozen rather than destroyed, but the 12-month clock does not appear to stop, so a long gap will quietly empty the balance. Redeem before you cancel. More on the exit mechanics at renewal and refunds.

Stacking Amazon Day

The one place rewards get materially better is Amazon Day. Amazon states members can earn 1% back on the value of your order for eligible items when choosing Amazon Day delivery, and its own page notes that members can stack multiple offers.

For an organization that can tolerate consolidated weekly deliveries — an office, a school, a clinic — this is close to free money layered on a change most sites want anyway, because it also cuts the number of deliveries someone has to sign for. The delivery mechanics are on Business Prime shipping and delivery.

Rewards versus the Amazon Business cards

Amazon separately promotes Business cards that it says earn 3% or 5% back at Amazon.com, Amazon Business, AWS and Whole Foods Market on purchases with an eligible Prime membership, with terms and a cap applying.

Those rates are higher than the membership rewards, which raises the obvious question of whether a card makes the membership redundant. It does not — they are different instruments, one of which requires the other to reach its top rate. We work through that properly on Business Prime versus the Amazon Business cards.

The honest summary

Prime Business Rewards is a well-constructed loyalty scheme with three limiting factors that Amazon publishes and most write-ups omit: it is scoped to Amazon's own brands, it expires at 12 months, and it cannot be parked in gift cards. Take it as a discount on spend you were making anyway, not as a financing mechanism for the membership.

If you are choosing a tier, note that the 4% rate arrives with Small at $499/year — the same tier that first unlocks extended payment terms. That combination, not the rewards rate alone, is usually what justifies the step up. Tier detail on Business Prime plans compared.

Common questions

How much do you earn with Prime Business Rewards?

Amazon states Duo and Essentials members earn 2% back, while Small plan members earn a 4% bonus on any eligible purchase from Amazon's own brands. Members can also earn 1% back on the value of eligible orders when choosing Amazon Day delivery.

Do Prime Business Rewards points expire?

Yes. Amazon states rewards points expire 12 months after they are issued, and that when you redeem, Amazon always uses the points set to expire soonest.

How much is a Prime Business Rewards point worth?

Amazon states the conversion rate is 100 points = $1.

What can I not redeem Prime Business Rewards on?

Amazon states you can redeem rewards points on most orders except digital items and gift cards. Redemption happens at checkout and is limited to members on a Prime Business Duo, or paid Essentials or Small plan.

What happens to my points if I cancel Business Prime?

Amazon states that if you cancel your membership you stop earning rewards and your unexpired points become unavailable, and that if you rejoin Prime Business your unexpired points become available to use again. Points are effectively frozen rather than immediately destroyed.

Do rewards apply to everything I buy on Amazon Business?

No. Amazon frames the headline rates around eligible purchases from its own brands, which is a subset of the catalog rather than the whole of it. Treat any rewards calculation on your total Amazon spend as a ceiling, not a forecast.

Can rewards alone pay for a Business Prime membership?

Only at substantial qualifying spend. At 2% back, an Essentials membership at $179 a year needs about $8,950 of qualifying spend to break even on rewards alone. At 4%, a Small membership at $499 needs about $12,475. Both figures assume every dollar qualifies, which it will not.
